What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making you understandable, citable, and nameable by the AI engines answering your customers’ questions. Where SEO competes for rankings, AEO competes for inclusion in the answer. The answer is the new front page. AEO is how you earn a place in it.
Why AEO exists now
For twenty years, being found online meant ranking in a list of blue links. AI engines changed the format. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok don’t show ten options. They give one answer, in plain words. They name a few sources at most. Sometimes they name only one.
An answer engine is any AI system that responds to a question with a direct answer instead of a list of links. The chat engines are the obvious ones. Google’s AI Overviews sit in the middle: a generated answer placed above the classic results. All of them decide, on their own, who gets mentioned. Nobody buys their way in.
This shift has research behind it. In 2023, researchers coined the term generative engine optimization. Their study found that pages built for citation, with clear claims, quotes, and statistics, can raise their visibility in AI answers by as much as 40 percent. Read that again: the way a page is written changes whether an engine uses it. This is the ground AEO works on.
The three things an engine needs from you
Before an engine can put you in an answer, three things have to be true.
- It can read you. This is readability. The engine’s crawler has to parse your pages and find the substance. Clean markup, real headings, and content that doesn’t hide behind scripts.
- It can quote you. This is citability. Your pages need passages that stand alone as answers: who you are, what you do, for whom, backed by sources. Engines lift what already looks like an answer.
- It can name you. This is namability. The engine has to know who you are with enough confidence to say your name. A consistent name, clear entity information, and structured data that ties it together.
Miss any one of the three and the engine moves on to a business it can use.
What AEO work actually looks like
AEO isn’t a trick, and it isn’t new metadata sprinkled on old pages. Most of it is plumbing:
- Entity work. The same name and the same description of your business, everywhere it appears: your site, your profiles, the sources engines check you against.
- Structured data. Schema.org markup that says in machine language exactly what your pages say in English.
- Information architecture. Pages organized around the real questions your customers ask, so each page has one clear job.
- Answer-first content. The direct answer at the top of the page, not buried under wind-up. The page you are reading works this way.
- Measurement. Asking engines the questions that matter in your market and tracking who gets named, before the work and after it.
How is this different from SEO?
SEO and AEO are neighbors, not rivals. SEO helps people find you in ranked search results. AEO decides whether an engine names you inside its answer. Strong SEO gives AEO a better foundation, because engines still crawl and still weigh authority. But ranking is not being named. You can hold page one in search and be invisible in the answer. The two need separate measurement.
Here’s the practical difference. An SEO report tells you which position you hold for a keyword. An AEO measurement tells you whether ChatGPT names you when a buyer asks who to hire, whether Perplexity cites your page, and whether Gemini describes you accurately. Different question, different evidence, different fixes.
Can you do AEO yourself?
Some of it, yes. Naming consistency and answer-first writing are habits any team can build. Structured data and entity work take more technical care. The honest order is simple: measure first, fix what the measurement shows, and learn the method as you go. The method is teachable, and keeping it in-house is a fine goal. What matters is starting from evidence instead of guesswork.
How do you know if you need it?
Ask, then measure. Open an engine and ask the questions your customers ask. Note who gets named. If competitors keep taking the answer, we’ve written about why AI recommends them instead of you. Then run a free single-page scan to see whether an engine can read and cite your most important page. If the gap is real, an AI Visibility Audit measures it properly and turns it into a prioritized list of fixes.
The question isn’t whether AI answers are shaping buying decisions. They already are. The question is whether you’re in them.
