Fernwell Answers:

Does ranking on Google get me into AI answers?

By Wellington Powers 4 min read

Mostly, no. Ranking well on Google does not carry over into AI answers. When Ahrefs studied 15,000 real questions, only 8 percent of the pages ChatGPT cited in its answers also ranked in Google’s top ten for the same question. AI engines choose their sources their own way. If your visibility plan is built only on rankings, you can be strong in search and absent from the place more buying decisions now start.

The numbers, plainly

Ahrefs ran a simple test. Take 15,000 long-tail questions. Search them on Google. Then ask the same questions to AI assistants and record which pages get cited. The overlap was small almost everywhere:

  • 8 percent of ChatGPT’s in-text citations ranked in Google’s top ten for the same question.
  • Across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot together, the figure was 12 percent.
  • About 80 percent of those citations didn’t appear anywhere in Google’s top 100.
  • Perplexity was the outlier: roughly 29 percent of its citations came from Google’s top ten.

Read the 80 percent line again. Most of the pages AI engines cite are pages Google barely ranks at all.

Why the overlap is so small

AI engines don’t run one search and read the top results. When you ask an engine a question, it quietly rewrites your question into several related ones and pulls pages for each. Researchers call this query fan-out. A question about payroll for restaurants might fan out into questions about tip reporting, state payroll rules, and small-business payroll pricing. The engine gathers pages across all of them. Then it picks the passages it can quote with confidence.

So the engine isn’t looking for the page that ranks. It’s looking for the page that answers. Those are different contests, and pages win them in different ways. We’ve broken down what the answering contest rewards in our explainer on Answer Engine Optimization: readable pages, quotable claims, and a business the engine can name.

A quick example

Say you sell accounting software. On Google, “best accounting software for small firms” is a bloodbath. Ten big brands hold the first page. You rank 24th. In an AI engine, the contest looks different. The engine fans the question out and finds your comparison page. The page states prices in plain numbers. It quotes a named customer. It says who the product fits and who it doesn’t. The engine can use this. It cites you next to two of the giants. Nobody clicked to page three of Google to find you. The engine did.

What this means for you

  • Rankings are not evidence of AI visibility. A page-one position tells you nothing about whether ChatGPT names you. The only way to know is to ask the engines and record who they cite. If the answer keeps featuring other businesses, here’s why that happens.
  • The door is open to smaller sites. If 80 percent of citations come from outside the top 100, engines are finding and quoting pages that never won the ranking game. A clear, quotable page on a modest site can be cited over a vague page on a big one. This is rare good news for challengers.
  • SEO still matters, but it answers a different question. Crawlers still have to find you, and authority still counts. Keep the foundation. Just stop assuming it covers the answer layer, because the data says it doesn’t.

Is SEO dead, then?

No. You still want to be found in search. You still want links and authority. The study doesn’t say rankings are worthless. It says rankings don’t transfer. Think of it as two doors into the same shop. You’ve spent years polishing one door. The other door is now where more buyers walk in. Polish both.

What to do with this

Treat AI visibility as its own channel with its own measurement. Start small: run a free single-page scan to see whether an engine can read and cite your most important page. Then ask a few engines the questions your customers actually ask, and write down who gets named. If competitors keep taking the answer, an AI Visibility Audit measures the gap across engines and turns it into a prioritized list of fixes.

The ranking contest and the answering contest run side by side. You already compete in one. The 8 percent number is the reason to start competing in the other.
